I recently did this for my good buddies at the Chronicle of Higher Education.  It’s for a story about a teacher moving to Appalachia, fearing the worst (culturally, racially…), but discovered she fit right in and loved it there.  It’s tough  to make a picture about expecting a problem and then not having one, so I went around it and came up with ideas about starting over and fitting in somewhere new.   This was a surprisingly challenging one, but I am pleased with the result, thanks in large part to the art director Ellen Winkler.

One response to “Appalachia

  1. This is a terrific and powerful image, evoking a sense of alienation, fear, yet at the same time hope and possibility. The latter emotions due to the gentle coloration of the background I think. I love it.
